KISS - "(Music from)The Elder" (1981)
After Peter Criss ("Catman") left KISS, the band was forced to look for another drummer.
In 1980 their new album "Unmasked" reached number 35 on the U.S. charts. But neither the musicians nor the fans
were happy with it. The fans
got used to the heavier, faster and harder music. They could have known another KISS on
their previous albums ("Hotter than Hell", "Destroyer", "Love Gun" etc). Hence, most of the die-hard fans
did not like "Unmasked". Under such unfavourable circumstances auditions for a new drummer
were started. Eventually Paul Caravello who was regarded as an unknown talent became a new KISS member.
Like other KISS musicians, he created his exceptional image. He had shaven off his moustache
and changed his name to Eric Carr ("The Fox"). Meanwhile, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and
Eric Carr had an urge to issue another album. To accomplish that challenging task, they
hired Bob Ezrin who was also a producer of PINK FLOYD's audiovisual project called "The Wall". As both the concept album and
the film turned out to be successful, he advised KISS to do the same thing.
The new LP "(Music from) The Elder" was finally released in November 1981. It appeared that
the music was the sound-track to a movie. Unfortunetely, the film had not been made.
The cover of LP presents a hand
of a person who is probably trying to knock on an ancient door which comes from the medieval times.
The lyrics of the songs tell us a story of a young boy. As a child
he does not know anything about his exceptional mission to save the universe and entire human race.
But some day when he is a mature man, he feels strong enough to fight against evil.
Thus our hero, who goes by the name of The Elder, commits himself to join a secret organization.
"Under The Rose" could be the name for it. In the end, he can protect
the universe and the Earth from destruction. Furthermore, his mission has been completed for the sake of both people and the
peculiar community he belongs to ("The Elders").
Analysing "(Music from) the Elder" it may be said that the album is definitely harder and heavier than "Unmasked".
We may listen to a few impressive songs. I am especially addicted to:
Odyssey, Only You, Under The Rose, Dark Light and A World Without Heroes.
The last song is one of the most beautiful ballads by KISS.
"(Music from) The Elder" was the first album for a fresh drummer - Eric Carr.
He was capable of
setting his own style of playing drums.
So, the sound of upcoming KISS productions from the 1980s would be enriched by an instrumental
novelty.
To sum up, although many fans actually think little of "(Music from) The Elder",
the album is somehow special. Both the lyrics and the music deserve a film

Po tym jak Peter Criss ("Człowiek Kot") opuścił KISS, zespół był zmuszony do szukania
innego perkusisty. W 1980 roku ich nowy album "Unmasked" ("Zdemaskowani") dotarł do 35 miejsca
na amerykańskich listach przebojów. Jednak ani muzycy, ani fani nie byli z niego zadowoleni. Fani
przywykli do cięższej, szybszej i mocniejszej muzyki. Mogli poznać inny KISS na ich poprzednich
albumach ("Hotter than Hell", "Destroyer", "Love Gun" itp.). Stąd, większości zagorzałych fanów
nie podobała się płyta "Unmasked". W takich niesprzyjających warunkach rozpoczęły się przesłuchania
nowego perkusisty. W końcu Paul Caravello, który był uważany za nieznany talent, został nowym
członkiem KISS. Podobnie jak inni muzycy KISS, stworzył on własny, wyjątkowy "image". Zgolił wąsy oraz zmienił
imię i nazwisko na Eric Carr ("Lis"). Tymczasem, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley i
Eric Carr pragnęli wydać następny album. Aby wykonać to ambitne zadanie, zespół zatrudnił Boba Ezrina, który
był również producentem audiowizualnego projektu grupy PINK FLOYD o nazwie "The Wall" ("Ściana, Mur").
Gdy okazało się, że zarówno sam album, jak i film odniósł sukces, poradził on
KISS, aby zrobili to samo.
Nowy LP "(Music from) The Elder" został ostatecznie wydany w listopadzie 1981 roku. Zdawało się, że
ta muzyka była ścieżką dźwiękową do filmu pod tym samym tytułem. Niestety, taki film nie został nakręcony.
Okładka tego LP przedstawia dłoń jakiejś osoby, która prawdopodobnie próbuje zastukać do

na którego mówią "The Elder", zobowiązuje się do wstąpienia do tajnej organizacji.
"Under The Rose" jest być może jej nazwą. W końcu, chroni on wszechświat i Ziemię od zagłady. Ponadto
jego misja zostaje ukończona dla dobra zarówno ludzi, jak i osobliwej społeczności, do której należy ("The Elders").
Analizując "(Music from) The Elder" można powiedzieć, że ten album jest zdecydowanie cięższy i mocniejszy
niż "Unmasked". Możemy posłuchać kilku imponujących piosenek. Jestem entuzjastą zwłaszcza:
Odyssey, Only You, Under The Rose, Dark Light oraz A World Without Heroes.
Ostatnia piosenka jest jedną z najpiękniejszych ballad w dorobku KISS.
"(Music from) The Elder" był pierwszym albumem dla perkusisty będącego nowicjuszem - Erica Carra.
Umiał on ustanowić swój własny styl grania na perkusji. Tak więc, brzmienie kolejnych produkcji KISS z lat 80.
XX wieku będzie wzbogacone o tę nowinkę instrumentalną.
Podsumowując, mimo że wielu fanów nie ma wysokiego mniemania o płycie "(Music from) The Elder",
to ten album jest na swój sposób wyjątkowy. Zarówno teksty piosenek, jak i muzyka zasługują
