KISS - "Animalize" (1984)
After "Lick it Up" came out, the KISS members had begun to realize that the music - not the
make-up - was the most siginificant attribute which actually proved their artistic value.
Their next album entitled "Animalize" was completed on September 30, 1984. That time
KISS started "Animalize" live tour. It was in Brighton, England.
It should be remembered that while working on the music for this LP, the band had to look for a lead guitarist.
Vinnie Vincent who used to play his fine parts for "Creatures of The Night" and "Lick it Up" was no longer eager to
be a KISS member. Just like Ace Frehley, Vinnie Vincent walked out of KISS in order to
produce his solo albums ("they were launched under the label" Vinnie Vincent Invasion). Meanwhile, the remaining three members of KISS (Paul, Gene and Eric) luckily met Mark Norton (renamed Mark St. John). He was a Californian lead guitarist who was known for his
incredible technical talent. Mark St. John made a good impression on KISS and
he was believed to be the one who would give the band more energy and power than the group could have expected.
But, the band did not know anything about Mark's rare disorder. Within months after
joining KISS Mark St. John went down with Reiter's Syndrome.
The disease rapidly contributed to a serious motor disability.
As the illness grew even worse Mark could no longer play guitar. Moreover,
the handicap counted him out from KISS performances. As it was no time to lose Paul Stanley
found Bruce Kulick who finally substituted for Mark St. John. Bruce Kulick was KISS fourth lead
guitarist. He also seemed to stay with the band much longer.
Regarding the music from "Animalize", its artistic quality is rather underestimated by the majority of fans.
This LP with a quite bizarre title which may suggest that people can be like animals
concerning their behaviors, is lacking hits.
Just two tracks (Heaven's on Fire and Thrills in The Night),which were written by Paul Stanley
and the collaborators (Desmond Child, Jean
Beauvoir), can be found absorbing. But the other seven tracks are provided with
a common and simple heavy metal sound.
Nonetheless, those who are fond of heavy metal rock should be happy with "Animalize".
The lyrics of this LP are even much more interesting.
They (see the top of this page) are about:
- sexual arousal, passion, desire (Heaven's on Fire, Burn Bitch Burn);
- prostitution, sex without love, sex addiction (Thrills in The Night, While The City Sleeps);
- a story of the lady who kills the men by means of her high heels (Murder in High Heels);
- sex, love and loneliness (Lonely Is The Hunter);
- negative risk behavior, sensation seeking, cheap thrills, searching for the meaning in life [Under The Gun, I've Had Enough (Into The Fire), Get All You Can Take].
KISS - "Zezwierzęcenie" (1984)
Po wydaniu płyty "Lick it Up", członkowie KISS zaczęli rozumieć, że muzyka, jaką grają -
nie makijaż - stanowiła najistotniejszą cechę, która właściwie dowodziła ich artystycznej wartości.
Ich kolejny album zatytułowany "Zezwierzęcenie" ("Animalize") został ukończony 30
września 1984 roku. W tamtym czasie KISS ruszyli w trasę koncertową "Animalize". Było to w Brighton, w Anglii.
Powinniśmy pamiętać, że podczas gdy kapela pracowała nad muzyką na tę płytę, musiała także szukać gitarzysty solowego.
Vinnie Vincent, który zagrał swoje dobrze brzmiące partie gitarowe na płytach "Creatures of The Night" i "Lick it Up"
nie chciał już dłużej być członkiem KISS. Podobnie jak Ace Frehley, Vinnie Vincent
odszedł z KISS w celu wyprodukowania swoich solowych albumów ("wystartowały one pod szyldem" Vinnie Vincent Invasion).
Tymczasem, pozostałych trzech członków KISS (Paul, Gene i Eric) miało szczęście poznać Marka Nortona (znanego pod imieniem i nazwiskiem Mark St. John). Był on kalifornijskim gitarzystą solowym, który był znany ze swojego niebywałego
talentu do gry. Mark St. John zrobił dobre wrażenie na KISS i uwierzono, że będzie tym,
który doda zespołowi więcej energii i mocy niż grupa mogłaby oczekiwać.
Jednak, zespół nie wiedział nic o rzadkiej chorobie Marka. W ciągu miesięcy po
przyjęciu do KISS Mark St. John zachorował na zespół Reitera. Choroba szybko
spowodowała ciężką niepełnosprawność ruchową. Gdy schorzenie coraz bardziej dawało się we znaki
Mark nie mógł już dłużej grać na gitarze. Ponadto, upośledzenie wykluczyło go z
uczestniczenia w koncertach KISS. Gdy nie było czasu do stracenia Paul Stanley odnalazł
Bruce'a Kulicka, który wreszcie zastąpił Marka St. Johna. Bruce Kulick został
czwartym gitarzystą KISS. Wydawało się też, iż zostanie on z zespołem dużo dłużej.
Mając na względzie muzykę na "Animalize", to jej artystyczna wartość jest raczej
niedoszacowana przez większość fanów.
Ta płyta z dość dziwacznym tytułem, który może sugerować, że ludzie mogą przypominać
zwierzęta w zakresie swoich zachowań, nie ma hitów.
Tylko dwa kawałki (Heaven's on Fire i Thrills in The Night), które napisał
Paul Stanley i jego współpracownicy (Desmond Child, Jean Beauvoir), mogą wzbudzać większe
zainteresowanie. Jednak pozostałym siedmiu kawałkom zapewniono zwyczajne i proste brzmienie
heavy metalowe. Niemniej jednak, ci którzy lubią heavy metal rock powinni być zadowoleni z "Animalize".
Teksty z tego LP są nawet dużo bardziej interesujące.
