BAD RELIGION is one of the most melodic hardcore punk bands one could ever mention. Their music is remarkable and even someone who is not a fan of punk rock should respect this American band. It feels like all their songs sound the same but that is just an illusion. Unlike other hardcore bands BAD RELIGION perfectly combines the aggresive, tough sound with melody (chorus can be heard in every song). Among the Southern California hardcore punk bands of the early 1980s, BAD RELIGION reached the top. They were formed in the northern suburbs of Los Angeles in 1980. The artists were: a guitarist Brett Gurewitz, a vocalist Greg Graffin, a bassist Jay Bentley, and a drummer Jay Ziskrout. Gurewitz set up his own record company, Epitaph, to release the BAD RELIGION music. "How Could Hell Be Any Worse?", their debut album, was released in 1982. It was noticed by the national U.S. hardcore punk scene. After they had released that record, the playing crew changed, because a bassist Paul Dedona and a drummer Davy Goldmen joined the group. "Into The Unknown", the band's second LP, was issued in 1983. The music of this album could have not impressed anybody. Some their fans even got angry with its content. Unfortunately, the band was not free from personal problems and conflicts. Gurewitz had to take 1984 off to recover from various substance abuse problems, leaving Graffin as the band's only original member. In addition to Graffin, the 1984 incarnation of the band featured a former CIRCLE JERKS guitarist Greg Hetson, a bassist Tim Gallegos, and a drummer Peter Finestone. BAD RELIGION's next release, the harder, punkier "Back To the Known" EP restored faith among the band's fans. BAD RELIGION returned in 1987. The band members were: Gurewitz, Graffin, Lishrout, Hetson, and Finestone. They released "Suffer" the following year. Then other smashing albums were available to fans: "No Control" (1989) and "Against The Grain" (1990). By the time of their 1993 album "Recipe For Hate", the rock music played by BAD RELIGION had become popular in many social circles not only among punk rockers. "Recipe For Hate" was originally released by Epitaph but it was soon re-released with the support of Atlantic. The group's first top album was a 1994's LP entitled: "Stranger Than Fiction". It was also the Gurewitz's last album with the group. Before the release of "Stranger Than Fiction", Epitaph by Gurewitz had an unexpected hit with an OFFSPRING's "Smash".
BAD RELIGION, czyli ZŁA RELIGIA to jeden z najbardziej melodyjnych zespołów hardcore punk. Ich muzyka jest znakomita, a nawet ktoś, kto nie jest wielbicielem punk rocka, powinien szanować tę amerykańską kapelę. Można odnieść wrażenie, że wszystkie kawałki BAD RELIGION brzmią tak samo, ale to tylko złudzenie. W odróżnieniu od innych zespołów punkowych i hardcore'owych BAD RELIGION doskonale łączy to agresywne, mocne brzmienie z melodią (chórek, refren słychać w tle każdego utworu). Wśród innych kapel punk rock hardcore wywodzących się z południowej Kalifornii, to BAD RELIGION wdrapali się na sam szczyt. Powstali na północnych przedmieściach Los Angeles w 1980 roku. Muzykami byli: gitarzysta Brett Gurewitz, wokalista Greg Graffin, basista Jay Bentley oraz perkusista Jay Ziskrout. Gurewitz założył swoją własną wytwórnię płytową Epitaph, aby wydawać twórczość BAD RELIGION. "How Could Hell Be Any Worse?" ("Jak piekło mogłoby być czymś jeszcze gorszym?"), ich debiutancki album, został wydany w 1982 roku. Został dostrzeżony przez narodową scenę hardcore punk w USA. Po nagraniu tej pierwszej płyty, skład zespołu uległ zmianie, ponieważ basista Paul Dedona i perkusista Davy Goldmen dołączyli do zespołu. "Into The Unknown" ("Podróż w nieznane"), druga płyta zespołu, ukazała się w 1983 roku. Muzyka na tej płycie nie mogła zachwycić nikogo. Niektórzy fani zespołu nawet stali się rozgoryczeni i wściekli z powodu zawartości płyty. Niestety kapela nie była wolna od problemów osobistych i konfliktów. Gurewitz musiał sobie odpuścić cały 1984 rok, aby poradzić sobie ze swoimi uzależnieniami. Opuścił Graffina - jedynego w tamtej chwili muzyka, pamiętającego początki zespołu. W 1984 do Graffina dołączyli były gitarzysta CIRCLE JERKS Greg Hetson, basista Tim Gallegos i perkusista Peter Finestone, przyczyniając się do "reinkarnacji zespołu". Następne dzieło BAD RELIGION, mocniejsze i bardziej punkowe pod względem muzycznym pt.: "Back To the Known" EP ("Powrót do tego co nam znane") pozwoliło odzyskać zaufanie fanów kapeli. BAD RELIGION powrócili w 1987 roku. Członkami kapeli byli wtedy: Gurewitz, Graffin, Lishrout, Hetson i Finestone. Wydali "Suffer" ("Cierpienie") w następnym roku. Potem fani uzyskali dostęp do innych świetnych albumów: "No Control" ("Bez kontroli", 1989) oraz "Against The Grain" ("Pod prąd", 1990). Do chwili pojawienia się na rynku płyty "Recipe For Hate" ("Przepis, recepta na nienawiść", 1993), rock grany przez BAD RELIGION zyskał popularność w wielu kręgach społecznych, nie tylko wśród fanów punk rocka. Płyta "Recipe For Hate" została początkowo wydana przez Epitaph, a wkrótce dokonano jej re-edycji za sprawą Atlantic. Pierwszym albumem - hitem zespołu była płyta pt. "Stranger Than Fiction" ("Dziwniejsze niż fikcja"). Był to także ostatni album Gurewitza nagrany z zespołem. Zanim pojawił się album "Stranger Than Fiction" pod egidą Epitaph, Gurewitz osiągnął rozgłos z kapelą THE OFFSPRING za sprawą albumu "Smash".

By their lyrics the guys tell us about things that really matter and are worth considering (violence, consumption, greed, independence, love, trust, faith, evil, stupidity, ignorance, free will, peace, earth protection). However the lyrics are very difficult to translate into Polish. Sometimes they can even seem meaningless but it is absolutely not true. They require an insight. The name of the band is provocative. It may refer to either freedom from religion (atheist, agnostic attitude) or freedom of religion (positive social attitude towards diverse religious beliefs, denominations, world religions).
W swoich tekstach BAD RELIGION mówi nam o kwestiach, które są naprawdę ważne i warte rozpatrzenia (przemoc, konsumpcja, chciwość, niezależność, miłość, zaufanie, wiara w Boga, zło, głupota, ignorancja, wolna wola, pokój, ekologia). Jednak teksty te jest bardzo trudno przetłumaczyć na polski. Czasem wydaje się, że są nawet bez sensu, ale to absolutnie nie jest prawdą. Wymagają wglądu w ich treść.
