KISS - "HOT IN THE SHADE" (1989)

Two years had passed since the last studio album ("Crazy Nights", 1987), excluding a compilation album "Smashes, Thrashes, And Hits", came out. It was a very tense time because Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley seemed to lose interest in KISS. Gene was producing music of other bands. Paul was dreaming of a solo career. The fans were worried about the end of KISS. Luckily, in 1989 KISS started working on a new album which was entitled "Hot in The Shade". Due to the restricted budget, the album was a set of songs which varied in quality, including demos, reworked songs. The LP contained 15 songs and the music time length was about 59 minutes. It was a special album in terms of the authorship of songs. Each of 15 songs was written not only by a KISS member but it was also a co-author's thing. Desmond Child, Vini Poncia and Adam Mitchell were known for their past contributions, but one could have noticed some new names: Holly Knight, Tommy Thayer (the future KISS member), Bob Halligan, Jr, Michael Bolton. The album was released on October 17, 1989 and the band's lineup was: Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick. The most famous song Forever was co-written by Paul Stanley and Michael Bolton. The single reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and it was the first big KISS hit since Beth from "Destroyer". The album was awarded Gold Status and It ranked 29th on the Billboard Charts. In my opinion "Hot In The Shade" is a good album. It may be branded as a higher league compared to "Animalize", "Asylum" and "Crazy Nights" which are less impressive. My favorite tracks are: Rise To It, Betrayed, Silver Spoon, Cadillac Dreams, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, The Street Giveth And The Street Taketh Away, Little Caesar. Rise To It was written by Paul Stanley and Bob Halligan. Listening to it, you may feel like time stopped in the 1970s, the glam rock decade. Betrayed was composed by Gene Simmons and Tommy Thayer (the future KISS guitarist). A cool hard and heavy sound coexists with a dark tone of the song's lyrics related to dangerous liaisons. The next one Silver Spoon is a team effort by Paul Stanley and Vini Poncia. It is one of the best tracks here. The song is not only catchy but also lyrically absorbing. Cadillac Dreams and Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell are created by a magnificent duet Gene Simmons-Vini Poncia. Both songs are on the top of my list. The former reflects the unforgettable spirit of the 1970s regarding the music and the lyrics concerning a luxury lifestyle. The latter is famous for an incredible bass guitar sound, and its lyrics could refer to love affairs of a rock star. The Street Giveth And The Street Taketh Awayis another great song written by Gene Simmons and Tommy Thayer. It is a pure heavy metal song about the street justice and crime. Last but not least on my list is Little Ceasar. The song was written by Eric Carr, Bruce Kulick and Adam Mitchell. It is a peculiar song for a few reasons. First, it is the only one which was sung by Eric (died in 1991). Second, in my opinion, it should be considered a greatest hit on the entire album. Moje ulubione kawałki to: Rise To It, Betrayed, Silver Spoon, Cadillac Dreams, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, The Street Giveth And The Street Taketh Away, Little Caesar. Utwór Rise To It został napisany przez Paula Stanleya i Boba Halligana. Słuchając tej piosenki można mieć poczucie, że czas zatrzymał się w latach 70. XX wieku, w dekadzie glam rocka. Świetne, ciężkie brzmienie współwystępuje tutaj z mrocznym oddźwiękiem słów tej piosenki odnoszącym się do niebezpiecznych związków. Kolejny utwór Silver Spoonjest dziełem zespołu Paul Stanley i Vini Poncia. Jest to jeden z najlepszych kawałków na płycie. Piosenka nie tylko łatwo wpada w ucho, ale i jej tekst jest ciekawy. Cadillac Dreams i Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell to owoc twórczości cudownego duetu Gene Simmons i Vini Poncia. Obie piosenki są na szczycie mojej listy. Pierwsza z nich odzwierciedla niezapomnianego ducha lat 70. XX wieku jeśli chodzi o muzykę i słowa tej piosenki dotyczące luksusowego stylu życia. Ta druga słynie z niezwykłego brzmienia gitary basowej, a jej słowa mogą odnosić się do romansów gwiazdy rocka. The Street Giveth And The Street Taketh Awayto następny świetny utwór napisany przez Gene'a Simmonsa i Tommy'ego Thayera. Jest to czysty heavy metal a zarazem piosenka o sprawiedliwości ulicy i zbrodni. Ostatnim, ale nie mniej ważnym w moim wykazie, jest utwór Little Ceasar. Eric Carr, Bruce Kulick i Adam Mitchell byli autorami tej piosenki. Jest ona osobliwa, swoista z kilku powodów. Po pierwsze, jest to jedyna piosenka na płycie, którą zaśpiewał Eric (zmarły w 1991 roku). Po drugie, moim zdaniem, to ten utwór powinien być uznany za największy przebój całego albumu.
